19Resources and Methods for Innovation
Some professional service firms dedicate some fee earners and non-fee earning support staff (for example, in marketing and IT) to innovation activities to provide a core resource. This can be effective in ensuring that innovation activities do occur. However fee earners will need to be engaged at times to ensure that these projects reflect the realities of work and also to help in gaining their buy-in to new methods. As well as time, money is often required to fund innovation projects (for example, as capital investment for new IT or expenses for marketing materials) and to train employees and managers in how to effectively work in innovation activities (for example, in common improvement methods, use of Lean thinking and basic process mapping) and to provide tools and systems to support innovation work.
