ABSTRACT

Religious educationists are likely to recoil at the word 'confession' and even at the word 'commitment'. The onus is on the rationalist to say what is seriously deficient with someone whose confession of a faith has been brought about in an educational institution. Many religious educationists agree with White's approach to education. JP White has been a major figure in wanting to promote an education that will lead to the autonomy of pupils. John Hull, a highly influential figure in Religious Education (RE), argued against school worship in his book school worship: An Obituary, on the grounds that one cannot compel a child to worship. Unless one begins with the question concerning the basis upon which one teach religion and Christianity in particular, all the other questions, such as the rights of parents, the problems of other faiths, will never be resolved.
