ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book talks about roads and cars are deeply embedded in the Australian economy as well as in Australian popular culture. Australian transport policy has too often been compartmentalized geographically, institutionally and functionally. At State level there has been a historical flux of organizational consolidation and fragmentation. A movement towards integrated transport planning is clearly apparent in all three cities to varying degrees, and with varying methods and emphases. Integration of modal planning is implemented in Perth. For much of the twentieth century the dominant storyline around public transport was about how public transport, especially rail transport, was obsolescent. The book demonstrates the strength of the pro-roads groups which operate as part of a 'discourse network', sharing a common argumentative language with their respective State government roads agencies.
