ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how technology, social media and awareness are converging to instil a common regulatory standard nationally and transnationally. Social media, blogs and related media technology have increased transparency throughout the world, exposing corruption, graft and similar unethical business practices. There is a virtuous cycle of social media and other mechanisms for awareness leading to public pressure to transparency leading to government regulations and oversight leading to self-policing mechanisms for businesses. Computer systems and media applications have allowed for movements of suspect money to be traced much more simply, although legal systems have not been able to adapt as quickly to multi-jurisdictional issues. The impact of a developed nation versus a developing nations anti-corruption policies can have a dramatic impact on competition, safety and quality of products or services.
