ABSTRACT

“Irie” is a state of being. A conviction that everything is and will be okay despite what may be going on around you. Irie is a state of peace. The word was originally coined by the Rastafarian sect in Jamaica during the rise of this indigenous group in the 1930s. It is a term further brought to life in the Jamaican artistic culture, particularly in the home-grown reggae music genre pioneered and popularised by the legendary Bob Marley. Irie is now a familiar term to Caribbean island nations and is also a staple idiom among the Diaspora across North America and the United Kingdom.
