ABSTRACT

The North American lecture tour proved to be a life changing experience for Tyrwhitt, opening new horizons and significantly extending her personal and professional networks. The contacts she established on this trip made it possible for her to launch her trans-Atlantic career despite her limited financial resources and restrictions on travel. Tyrwhitt had a glittering introduction to the modernist elite in New York at a party hosted by the British Information Service. Upon her return to London, Tyrwhitt organized a conference on "Human Needs in Planning: the Contribution of Social Studies to Architecture and Planning". Tyrwhitt was particularly proud of APRR's library. APRR submitted evidence to the Committee on New Towns, under the direction of Lord Reith, which had been convened by the Ministry of Town and Country Planning. The APRR Information Bulletin for December 1946/January 1947 announced that Tyrwhitt would step down as director of studies for the School of Planning at the end of the Completion Courses.
