ABSTRACT

This chapter describes three overarching purposes. First, after providing a brief overview of the historical context in which the writing of the Church Dogmatics took place, attention will be given to Barth's restatement of the doctrine of the Word of God in its threefold form, especially noting how he sought to clarify and modify the analogy to the Triune relations in reference to the doctrine of perichoresis. Second, Barth's defense of the procession of the Spirit from the Father and Son as represented in CD I/1, will be analyzed and evaluated, especially through the lens of his rule of identity between the economic and immanent Trinity. Finally, the chapter compares Barth and T. F. Torrance on the doctrine of the Spirit's procession not only to show some of their essential similarities, but also to help clarify the grounds upon which Barth continued to defend the filioque.
