ABSTRACT

The concept and application of theatrical improvisation in this chapter helps to visualize the future of tacit knowledge management as it could be applied in healthcare organizations. Theatrical improvisation, like healthcare practice, is a highly skilled art form. Each relies on time-honored rules and standards that demand repeated practice to prepare for successful execution in real time. To the casual observer, improvisation looks spontaneous and free-form. To the person on stage, however, improvisation is considered one of the most difficult types of performance art. Only the most psychologically available, responsive, and alert improvisers referred to as 'actors' herein can reap the rewards of a brilliant performance earned through effective knowledge sharing before a live audience. Shared commitment and accountability is required for knowledge sharing to promote and sustain high-quality healthcare. The effective communication and knowledge sharing that takes place during theatrical improvisation can be used in a similar way in a healthcare organization.
