ABSTRACT

This chapter explores strategic business change processes contextualized in the family experience. It presents a case study that offers insights into the mechanisms that link culture with strategic change processes. The chapter considers Boyatzis's intentional change theory (ICT) to examine the progression of Juan Ramon Zapata from childhood to co-founder of a large cosmetic manufacturing and distribution company in Colombia. ICT differs from other change theories as it addresses change as a non-linear or discontinuous dynamic. Research on families in Colombia has shown links between family culture and values, entrepreneurship, and national economic development. The core principles of Juan Ramon's strategy are to expand through reinvestment and innovation, to build trust within and outside the organization, and, most importantly, to develop talent. Juan Ramon leads change by empowering those who are involved in executing change. Values, preferences, and beliefs, representatives of culture, were passed through a complex interconnected system.
