ABSTRACT

Having described a framework that explains how to rise to the position of leader, here we will discuss how leaders maintain their position. Staying at the top is of course relative to the time spent at the top and the way in which leaders conclude their ‘career’. Some of the leaders we discussed in the earlier chapters are testimony to the fact that staying at the top is much harder than rising to the top. This reality suggests that the two situations require the practice of somewhat different leadership qualities or at least the selective application of leadership behaviour. As a result, the best approach would be to see leadership as dynamic and evolving in a way that allows individuals to successfully ‘inuence’ their teams within the operational environment they face. As the environment changes, so does the practice.
