ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines two case studies from author's own practice and research that describe a range of approaches utilised to involve older people in a variety of arenas of professional education. Vella notes the importance of understanding the effect of power in educational relationships and the importance of establishing respect and affirmation in a safe environment. The making and subsequent use of the mockumentary in professional education illustrates a number of aspects of dementia care, allowing an insight into the personhood of those participating and their potential. Dementia is defined as a challenge within professional education and there has been increasing publicity about how those affected are marginalised and stigmatised and, around the unacceptably low standards of care. Social work education has been subject to constant revisions in the last decade that emphasise competency-based approaches to learning and teaching but direct leadership of older people can facilitate more active, engaged learning in a collaborative way through increased participation and empowerment.
