ABSTRACT
The identity of those inside and beyond fundamentalism is not only shaped by truth, but by its immediate partner – power. Truth concerns the effects of the promotion of specifi c fundamentalist discourse, the sanctions applied to independent thinking and the requirement for confession to recognised authority/shepherd-like fi gures within the church. Power is a chain-or net-like structure that circulates apparently unceasingly through the churches the participants have now left.
