ABSTRACT

The best guide to the development of Roman Catholic liturgy is George Every, The Mass, 1978. The best introductions to early church buildings are R. Krautheimer, Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture, 1965, and K. Painter, Churches Built in Ancient Times, 1994. Poul Hartling's, The Danish Church, 1964, part of a series entitled 'Danish Culture' published by Det Danske Selskab, also contains very useful material on worship and church buildings, and there is a substantial consideration of modern Lutheran worship in the Nordic countries in L.S. Hunter, Scandinavian Churches, 1965. The high church Anglican liturgies of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have been edited with an authoritative commentary by W.J. Grisbrooke, Anglican Liturgies of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, 1958. Paul Bradshaw, Companion to Common Worship, 2001, is an excellent commentary on the texts most recently authorised for use in the Church of England.
