ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the five steps in the explicit intent process within complex cognitive systems. It describes each of the five steps and methods to assess them were introduced and explained. The intent process is comprised of five steps or components that typically are carried out in the following sequence: formulation, communication, verification, interpretation, and implementation. The first two components are normally executed by a remote supervisor, distant agent, or senior commander. The last two components are carried out by the local agent or subordinate commander. The third component is performed jointly by the remote supervisor and local agent. The chapter describes methods for measuring and assessing explicit intent are essential tools for the cognitive engineering researcher. It concludes with a description of how process tracing can be used as an overarching strategy to assess the manner in which the explicit intent process is carried out.
