ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the commoditization of models and the dangers of misinterpretation of techniques. It explains the context where the role of most consultants is the integration of the well published methodologies into a workable solution for each client situation. The chapter discusses the emancipation of tacit knowledge and codified proprietary models of the larger consultancy practices via mass publication of consultancy authored books and how-to guides. The first “consultants” could be considered to be the traditional “wise men” and chiefs who became the custodians of “best practices” and it was their job to learn them and pass them on for the benefit of the community. Management consultancies subsequently developed proprietary methodologies to effectively protect their intellectual capital in a way organisations could only experience through engaging with that consulting firm. The important skills that consultants bring to the relationship are their experience and ability to integrate multiple methodologies into an appropriate solution for that organization.
