ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth description of the two Master Plans for the management of the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (HSM). It analyses the Master Plan 1998 and 2005, allowing the reader an in-depth, inside view of the contents and structure of a Master Plan, and of how, why and with which effects these elements can vary over time. The chapter reviews and compares some of the most salient aspects of each Plan in order to capture changes in the management of Machu Picchu and in the underlying managerial and organizational culture. Archaeologists in Machu Picchu not only are in favour of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), but they all seem to trust the 2005 Master Plan. The economic impacts of the development of Machu Picchu for the whole region are investigated as a source of economic development and tourism.
