ABSTRACT

As the world becomes diversified, living and working together in the context of plurality of identity is becoming the reality of life. Being one of the major characteristics of African continent in general, and Tanzania in particular, religious diversity is a phenomenon to be studied and well understood, thus harnessing its potential for enriching life in all its aspects. Although Tanzania is the only country in East Africa that since its independence has remained stable in terms of peace, unity and solidarity, recently signs of religious intolerance have become apparent in numerous ways. This calls for intensification of religious diversity management in various areas of everyday life, including in the workplace. Based on literature study and guided by a theory of human dignity, this contribution attempts to address the question: ‘What can be done to ensure proper management of religious diversity in the workplace, especially in the secondary schools in Tanzania?’ By way of introduction, this chapter provides a short background of Tanzania and its nature of religious diversity, arguing in the light of human dignity from the African Christian theological point of view. Thereafter the chapter tracks measures taken by Tanzania throughout its history to ensure that religious diversity and other aspects of diversity are properly managed and used for the common good of all. A third section explores the significance of managing religious diversity in the workplace with special focus on secondary schools. Finally, ways are articulated through which religious diversity in schools can be properly managed especially in the context of pluralistic society.
