ABSTRACT

Are there possible paths towards a new social pact during the sacred month of Ramadan, when the Muslim religion prescribes the observance of ritual fasting? This is the core question we are asking. The month of Ramadan, one of the 12 lunar months in the Islamic calendar, is in particular marked by ‘the privation of anything that might enter the body from sunrise to sundown (abstaining from food or drink, tobacco or sexual intercourse) and must be accompanied by an inner conversation, the reading of the Koran, donations to the poor … In the evening, dinner is an occasion for community gatherings and repasts to “break the fast”’ (Coureau, 2013, our translation). However, is this sacred month in phase with a model of good practices in matters of HRM and behaviour in the workplace?
