ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the critical core competencies one that need to succeed in attacking a new product/service market opportunity. The most critical aspect of core competencies is that they can create competitive differentiation and success across diverse new and existing competitive product/service markets; they are transportable, and can be leveraged to a large degree. A set of generic operational core competency dimensions is critical, since these must be evaluated across many disparate product/service market opportunities. Core competencies play a critical role in the creation of competitive product/service super-bundles, because they are the underlying bases for sustainable competitive differentiation. When General Electric (GE) started to put together more complex and larger product/service bundles, the core competencies enabled it to integrate them much more rapidly. In the GE case, highly related to the similar to the technologies core competencies, GE had developed a wide product and services portfolio, with a broad range of product/service bundle combinations to offer potential hospital customers.
