ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the contentious issue of censorship in the Russian mass media. The term censorship is derived from the Roman magistracy, The Office of the Censor. During times of armed conflict censorship is the sister of the moment. It explains the nature of censorship in a theoretical and practical sense, albeit beyond the armed conflict frame. Russian Civil is one of the modern tools of censorship, which can be used to intimidate media outlets from writing about personalities. The oligarchs who owned and controlled mass media assets wielded them as an information weapon, and there was no room permitted for a journalist to stray from the economic and political priorities of their owner. It was a form of censorship that was dictated by economic principles of a media enterprises owner. By controlling the message, one is able to control the perception of that audience. This assumes that the audience is passive and takes in the information without processing.
