ABSTRACT

As the title of this article suggests, it aims to explore the relationship between two independent entities: water and the human will. Our choice of this particular topic is largely informed by D.S. Likhachev’s foundational works on the style of gardens and parks. We will apply these works’ key ideas in examining the semantics of water features within the context of the gentry estate (Likhachev). Water on the estate, whether in a natural or artificial state, has yet to be studied as text, as an expression of the artistic consciousness of a particular country or era.
