ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the author's video artwork, which has coalesced around two related concepts. One is how we as travelers consciously or sub-consciously mediate our expression of travelling through various recording devices and how such mediation influences our understanding of the travel experience. Mediation of travel is not a new phenomenon; artists and travelers have captured elements of the foreign experience for many years through painting, poetry or travel writing. Through this process, travelers either consciously or subconsciously create particular identities for peoples and places. The author's travelogue works began with a piece, which has now become a series called hybrid journeys. In Hybrid Journeys, he presents a collection of nine places that recorded from tourist bus journeys in Singapore; Berlin, Germany; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; London, UK; New York City, USA; Budapest, Hungary; Hong Kong, China and Tokyo, Japan.
