ABSTRACT

The detailed analysis of the terms, conditions, and obligations of Ukraine in accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is stipulated by its economic and political binding with the Russian Federation. Ukraine has been the WTO member for eight years. Ukraine's experience in adaptation of its economy and legislation to the WTO's standards allows Russia to make and to learn certain lessons. Several periods can be distinguished in the negotiations process for Ukraine's accession to the WTO. They differ in the level of Ukraine's organizational readiness for the accession to the WTO and in the extent of its progress towards its goal. In acceding to the WTO, Ukraine assumed a number of commitments and made multiple concessions. Economists suggest that the onset of the global financial crisis of 2008, which so unluckily coincided with the moment of Ukraine's accession to the WTO, considerably complicates an objective assessment of the results of Ukraine's WTO membership.
