ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a broad range of positive affective states and dispositions. It outlines the work that has been performed on positivity in hopes of presenting a balanced scientific understanding of mental health in the workplace. The chapter illustrates the many benefits of positivity. Being inclined to experience positive emotions and to see the positive side of life can improve physical health, mental health, and work-life. It addresses positivity: how it occurs, its relationship to success in life, and why it should concern researchers, organizations, and society. Positivity, also termed positive affect, exists as a state level mood as well as an enduring personality trait. The benefits of positive emotions permeate into the workplace as well where positivity is associated with higher earnings, better productivity, and fewer absences. The benefits of positivity may be the result of a larger constellation of positive capacities, or they may be reflective of the ability to use emotions in an intelligent manner.
