ABSTRACT
A different group of ‘Chinese’ migrants In scholarly studies of migration to the United States, Europe and the Pacific region, including New Zealand, Australia and, to a lesser extent, some Pacific islands, Chinese immigrants’ experiences and their negotiation of identity have been widely observed and discussed. 1 ‘Chinese’ in these contexts often exclusively refers to the Han, who are the ethnic majority in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. However, Han are not the only ethnic group emigrating from China to other parts of the world. Focusing exclusively on Han Chinese migrants over-simplifies the complex migration process and neglects other important experiences of the ethnically heterogeneous ‘Chinese’ community.
