ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some basic data on the regional and local settlement patterns of immigrants in Sweden and also data on how this pattern has changed over time. The selection of immigrant categories made for the Swedish study is therefore highly relevant for Sweden but not necessarily appropriate for similar analyses in other countries. The chapter covers migration over a three-year period, which of course tends to reduce the volume of migrants. It also provides theoretical arguments for why we could expect migration to vary between natives and immigrants. The chapter reports empirical results from a study using comprehensive longitudinal Swedish population data. It then provides a descriptive overview but also a multivariate analysis of the likelihood of moving between labour market regions, from one neighbourhood to another within the same labour market region. Therefore some attention will also be paid to intra-neighbourhood migration.
