ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to ethically assess the present relationship between human mobility and borders, with a special focus on the EU, and proposes a path towards an ethicization of borders. It aims to raise several ethical questions based on a concerned look at the effects of such developments. The complex relationship between human mobility and national borders in the EU as well as in other regions of the world poses the first of some ethical questions. Internalized borders and exclusion of migrants, refugees and other itinerant people often result in a series of negative consequences. The superiority of the 'common good' is one of the major principles guiding contemporary politics. The ethical principle of co-responsibility is based on the awareness of the duty of all the members of humankind towards the proper stewardship, sound use and harmonious development of the natural and environmental resources.
