ABSTRACT

History has witnessed artists being arrested for their political positions; artists dealing with war; artists using art as propaganda; and artists who use their work as a trope to bring people together. There are different perspectives regarding the History of Art in relation to social change. There are different approaches, within the History of Art and Social Sciences, to understand art as a social system. Social sculpture is a term coined by German artist Joseph Beuys through a series of public lectures in the early 1970s in America, under the title "Energy Plan for the Western Man." An observation of the history of cultural studies shows that the diversity of the discipline currently proliferating is vast. The main traditions of cultural studies combine social theory, cultural critique, history, philosophical analysis, and specific political interventions, thus overcoming the standard idea of specialisation or single-disciplinary approaches.
