ABSTRACT

Art as a social system is looked at through the lenses of social sciences, then, the role of art appears to be more passive. Some researchers and academics argue that certain social systems have the power to regulate both the form and content of art. As the social remains a recurring theme in artistic practice, art history, and as study programmes of art schools, art historians and art critics claim the urgency to understand and locate the border of art's integration and relation with the social. Art is seen as a system representing unlimited values that surpass society, being considered as a system with a high position in relation to other social systems. The history of cultural studies shows its political commitment, perspectives, and strategies. The two dominant schools of this discipline – despite their different approaches – agree that culture is not only a form of resistance to capitalist society but also a mode of social reproduction.
