ABSTRACT

Introduction One in five people in Australia live in multigenerational households. In order to understand this significant and yet largely overlooked household form, we need to understand the drivers behind multigenerational living in Australia. This chapter (and book) draws on research undertaken as part of the Australian Research Council Discovery Project Living Together: The Rise of Multigenerational Households in Australian Cities (hereafter Living Together), including findings from a survey with 392 multigenerational household members in Sydney and Brisbane, analysis of 21 diaries and 21 follow-up interviews with multigenerational household members. This chapter focuses on their descriptions of how they came to live together.
