ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the theory of dynamic attending, and the aspect of entrainment in particular, as a way of explaining the perceptual mechanisms behind the experiential result of simultaneously sounding events with different schematic affiliations. When researchers in music psychology started investigating microtiming in music, two trends in particular seemed to emerge. The approach that best takes account of this mutual dependence between reference structures and sounding events in the perception of rhythm is dynamic attending theory. In the latter type of entrainment, the coupling is bidirectional, which in turn affects entrainment to external rhythms. The Roots are an American hip-hop band that has enjoyed significant commercial success since its 1993 debut album. The instrumental groove in 'Rock You' is stable and structured, consisting of relatively few instruments. The vocals supply an equally strong inclination toward a third pulse in this song. The snare drum is positioned right at the front of the soundscape and has a distinct, sharp timbre.
