ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses unnecessary and indecent conversations have been promoted and facilitated by the development of the telephone, which from this point of view can be seen as a technology capable of violating the moral order, as well as religious norms and values, according to the ulama. In a cultural or a religious context that strives to uphold a strict separation between the sexes, the telephone could become a problem because it is a technology that can easily help its users come into contact with the opposite sex, no matter what the physical distance, or to break established norms. With the development of the telephone technology, it has become both possible and very easy to contact individuals with whom people have no relationship. The chapter examines that the Muslims of today are facing new attitudes, problems, forms of behaviour and an increasing number of worldly temptations that have made it more difficult to follow the principles of Islam.
