Thereis,however,agreatdiscrepancybetweenthelongitudeofCoclcin'sSoundgivenbyBaffin,andthatgivenby SirJohnRossinhisvoyageof1818.Inthechartprefixed tothatvoyage,andinthetableoflatitudesandlongitudes annexed,1thelongitudeofCockin'sSoundismade53°00' W.Thereis,however,anotherstatementmadebySirJohn Ross,whichdiffersfromthechartandtable.Inpage35it isremarked,"wesawlandsouthofCokin'sSound.....It boreE.byN.toSouth,beingaboutfiftymilesdistant,accordingtothejudgmentofthemaster....thoughIthought itnotmorethanthirty-eight".Theship,whenthisremark wasmade,wasinlongitude55°42'W.Ifthisbethecorrect reading,Baffin'sapparenterrorissomewhatreduced;but stillthedifferenceisgreat,andistotallyatvariancewithall otherinstancesinwhichhisaccuracyhasbeentested.Such instanceswillbenoticedinconnexionwithhisvoyagesof 1615and1616.
