ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the culture of networks and the different organisational cultures and sub-cultures in networks. It has advanced our understanding of the ways in which a network culture develops and the effects of network culture for the effectiveness of both organisational networks and security networks. Network culture develops on the basis of stable membership, frequent interaction between members and shared emotionally intense experiences over time. Network culture' refers to the beliefs, values and attitudes that are shared by network members. A strong network culture can promote the effectiveness of networks as members are more likely to be committed to the network and to one another. Networks, as the current literature suggests, comprise many different organisational cultures and sub-cultures. The importance of narratives is, as Ronfeldt and Arquilla argue, not only in relation to developing a network culture but also in communicating different cultures to other network members.
