ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the ground warrior as the trials, tribulations, and challenges of all military personnel regardless of their race, gender or military occupational skill are expected to be prepared to perform in the extreme environments, on demand, and in conditions that are not always conducive to maximize human performance. It presents the challenges of humans involved in military operations. The chapter explains the five essential factors inherent in military actions: sensing, presenting, processing, communicating and understanding the situation; followed by how research can improve human performance in the intense environment of military operations. To supplement and augment human senses, a plethora of electronic sensors and devices are employed across the battlefield to assist the human in the sensing task. With myriad human and machine collectors on the battlefield, the presentation of the information and data becomes as challenging as collecting.
