ABSTRACT

This chapter considers a range of issues for collectors of media-based art and in particular how an artwork's authenticity is no longer tied simply to the object, but also to a nuanced understanding of the artist's intent in production and exhibition, and the collector's vision for its preservation. Olia Lialina, an early and influential Internet artist and media theorist, describes an emerging trend in the media art world flat computers. The New Art Trust is a non-profit organization created by noted media collectors Pamela and Richard Kramlich that is a brilliant example of how collectors should be proactively engaging with these changing conditions to preserve their own collections. In contrast, Cory Arcangel could be seen as an artist who more thinly articulates his work. Super Mario Clouds is, in comparison to Douglas, far less prescribed; however, there are still some parameters.
