ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book reviews the ageing of the working population and the rise of the knowledge economy. It reviews the changing workforce requires a new type of workspace one that accommodates the combination of the natural effects of ageing and the more complex patterns of knowledge work with greater imagination, flexibility and ease. The book examines the barriers to rethinking the culture around older knowledge workers from IT training to institutional ageism. It proposes the ways to redesign the environment to include older knowledge workers needs. In particular a mix of settings for concentration, collaboration and contemplation to break up the uniformity of low-choice, low-segmentation open-plan space, which has become so prevalent in recent years as companies have torn down walls to reap the benefits of lower cost and better communication.
