ABSTRACT

Deming's ideas are often taught in a completely separate module, or course, from ideas around total shareholder value or business process re-engineering. Many of Prospect's members, being from the scientific community, are acutely aware of the environmental pressures in the modern economy. Good jobs reduce incentives for earning in the informal or criminal economy, and in this way help to bind communities together. The role of business leaders might be more relevant to economic development and anti-poverty strategies than the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or the welfare departments of governments, whose role might be more for ensuring a safety net. Prospect is a trade union for scientists, engineers and related specialisms in the private and public sector in the UK, in sectors including agriculture, defence, energy, environment, heritage, shipbuilding and transport. The British trade union Prospect has sought to encourage corporate social responsibility programmes at the organisations where it has membership and representation.
