ABSTRACT

Integrated Operations (IO) denote the vision of a change process in the petroleum industry. Offshore drilling operations represent a domain where IO are expected to play a major role with respect to speed, quality and safety of operations. New technologies and new work processes are introduced to get a closer integration of the different disciplines and the data and information that circulate between them. The main body of empirical data stems from reviews of technical papers and research papers on IO technologies and work processes, on existing reports on an accident on the Norwegian continental shelf and an existing meta-analysis of the same accident. In the elaboration of the themes through the analysis of the case and the scenario, the sociotechnical perspective of existing organisational and systemic theories of safety will be contrasted with dominating sociotechnical perspectives of science and technology studies.
