ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on Cape Town, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam and examines walking and cycling travel behaviour, the risks facing pedestrians and cyclists, the status of infrastructure for walking and cycling, practices in road design and the workings of institutions responsible for planning for walking and cycling. It provides research findings that can be used to support political decision-making and practice in non-motorized transport (NMT) policy and infrastructure development. The book talks about studies undertaken between 2007 and 2015 by the African Centre of Excellence for Studies in Public and Non-Motorized Transport (ACET), funded by the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF). It examines the age and gender, the types of injuries, and the length of hospital stay treatment of injured pedestrians admitted to a referral hospital in Nairobi.
