ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the availability of non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure and facilities in 18 major road corridors in the City County of Nairobi (CCN), and the adequateness of the infrastructure. The 18 major roads in the city are: Ngong Road, Kikuyu Road, Naivasha Road, Kingara Road, James Gichuru Road, Gitanga Road, Argwings Kodhek Road, Argwings Kodhek Road Extension, Dennis Pritt Road, Valley Road, Kiambu Road, Heshima Road and so on. It is based on mapping the situation analysis of the 18 routes1 in 2006, 2011 and 2015 and a literature review on NMT travel analysis and infrastructure provision by the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) of the University of Nairobi. The 2011 and 2015 mapping was aimed at updating an initial inventory of NMT infrastructure, undertaken by Katahira and Engineers International and assessing available infrastructure and facilities in line with the principles for NMT development. The chapter discusses some of the proposals by Katahira and Engineers International has been addressed.
