ABSTRACT

Urban lifestyles and the quality of the urban environment are regarded as necessary in order to generate economic wealth. This chapter approaches the concepts of liveability, urbanity and sustainability in planning by reviewing the master plans of the Nordic capitals. Helsinki has looked closer at different themes such as urbanity. Copenhagen will provide green growth and quality of life. The main emphasis of the plan is the environment, traffic and social differences, and the four strategies focus on strengthening central Stockholm, emphasising strategic nodes, connecting city areas and creating vibrant urban areas. The City Plan shows how Stockholm will meet its goals and provides clear guidance regarding the city's intentions and objectives for sustainable development. The chapter critically analyses the concepts of urbanity and sustainability in the master plans of the Nordic capitals. The concepts of urbanity and sustainability in the plans are used as means to justify urban densification and attract creative people, tourists and firms.
