ABSTRACT
The title of this book is Nursing before Nightingale because perceptions about the origins of modern nursing are so bound up with Florence Nightingale and the nursing school established in her name in 1860 at St Thomas’ Hospital. The ‘Nightingale nurse’, young, trained and dedicated, quickly came to symbolize the modern nurse. However, this outcome was far from a foregone conclusion.
