ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the major intersections between online gambling and crime. Research that considers the negative impact of gambling and online gambling on society is an ongoing enterprise. The chapter explores the extent and nature of both crime that takes place in and around online gambling sites and crime that is associated with gambling, demonstrating how Internet gambling can operate as a cause of criminal activity, as a conduit for crime or support for other criminal enterprise. Consideration is given to illegal Internet gambling, money laundering, cyber extortion, betting related match fixing and 'gambling related crime'. Much of this criminal activity is not new, with computer mediated communications and new electronic media either 'expanding or enhancing', or 'generalising and radicalising' traditional criminal activities such as theft, fraud, money laundering and extortion Sandy well. Black and grey gambling markets are highly lucrative and siphon away significant revenues from legitimate operators and governmental coffers.
