ABSTRACT

I had the privilege of undertaking “field work” in Nashville during the last week of shooting for Stoker, Chan-wook Park’s first Hollywood-sponsored film 1 and his first film that uses opera as soundtrack. My field work was intended to look at the movie-making as a musicologist, to paraphrase Hortense Powdermaker’s book title. 2 After the final shooting was over on October 22, 2011, Chan-wook introduced me to Nicole Kidman, who plays the title role, Evelyn (Evie) Stoker. After shaking hands with Ms. Kidman, I introduced myself to her as a musicologist specializing in film music and opera. “Oh, really? How fantastic!” responded she with a sublime smile on her goddess-like face. 3
