Types of Political Parties and Party Families
This chapter explains the need to lay bare the genesis and development of parties within each family in Western Europe, from their beginnings to the present, and includes an overview of their current ideological underpinnings. It explores the ideological and programmatic perspectives, and treats organizational aspects as secondary. Of course this approach, too, runs into several problems. A groundbreaking work on the concept of party families was Parties et familles politiques by Daniel Louis Seiler, which made its widest mark in the Francophone social science environment. It will be dedicated to inspecting the basic ideological-programmatic elements of the party families within the context of the European Union. Where there is enough coherence between the given party family and the respective Europarty, it will also take into consideration the main programmatic points of departure of the Europarty.
