ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the book of the pilgrimage of Friar Riccoldo of the Order of Preachers. It examines the kingdoms, peoples, provinces, laws, rites, sects and heresies and the monsters that are in eastern parts so the brothers who wish to take up the task for Christ of extending the faith may know what they require and where and how they can best proceed. From Acre, the Mount of Leopards and, Mount Lebanon, where there are Maronites, who say that in Christ there is one will; however, in all other things, more so than any other eastern sect. Two miles from there they went to a place on a mountain, very high and difficult to climb, where the devil took Him up on to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world. Arriving in Jerusalem to visit the Sepulchre, again they ascended to Mount Sion, where Christ dined with the disciples and washed their feet.
