ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes the reverse process: how people, starting with their imagination, go in search of physical, material references. It analyses Bond tourism, Bond locations for some fans serve as a symbolic-material source of masculinity, where they can immerse themselves in the mediated masculinity of Bond. Although the rational mode recurs in all three cases, it comes to the fore particularly for fans of Bond and fans of the television detectives Inspector Morse, Baantjer and Wallander. Empirical research into the television detectives, James Bond and Dracula has given further substance to this theory and has generated a number of surprising results. Dracula fans think with pleasure back to the first time they read Stoker's novel or watched one of the film versions.
