ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the processes employed by police services in England and Wales for gathering intelligence that fits into the model including the intelligence cycle, the national intelligence model. It considers the impact of the Bichard enquiry and technological progress that underpins much police effort in gathering intelligence and information. The police services in the UK now use the national intelligence model (NIM) as a method of dealing with and disseminating intelligence inputs. Information technology (IT) can be defined as the Use of computers and electronic technology to store and communicate information and database is defined as the Store of information that can be easily handled by a 'computer'. Clearly for cyber threats, cyber hate, cyber terrorism and other forms of criminality, both local and global, to be dealt with effectively official agencies such as the police and security services must rely heavily on information and intelligence.
