ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the ways in which Poles who migrated to the United Kingdom after the enlargement of the European Union in 2004 use the Internet as part of their migration experience. It adopts social constructionism as a conceptual framework for the analysis and looks at what type of discourses on gender and ethnicity have been constructed by Poles using one specific Internet forum. As some authors claim, gender practices may be negotiated when people migrate and encounter different socio-cultural influences. The analysis shows for some Poles gender and ethnicity-related issues seem to be crucial within their wider experiences of migration to the UK, as they grapple with a reconfiguration of their identities within their new multicultural environment. As Polish women in the UK were typically criticized by Polish men participating in the forum, this analysis applies a feminist perspective and focuses on discourses related to gender and ethnicity expressed by both Polish women and men participating in the forum.
